Why SEL is important During Distance Learning

Social and Emotional Learning has always been important in meeting the needs of the whole child. SEL is critical in this time of distance learning because relationships and trust help students, families and educators navigate their emotions and become their best selves.

Students need to:

• know what their strengths are (self-awareness)
• get through something even when they feel frustrated  (self-management)
• learn from people with different opinions (social awareness)
• respect a classmate's opinions during a disagreement (relationship skills)

-These CASEL competencies are the backbone of SEL instruction.
